A used car can look perfect in photos and still hide expensive problems. This is the same 10-point pass our certified inventory goes through before it's listed — bring it with you to any viewing.
1–3: Engine, Transmission, and Fluids
Check the engine bay for oil leaks, listen for knocking at idle, and confirm the transmission shifts smoothly with no delay or jerking. Pull the dipstick — dark, gritty oil signals neglected maintenance.
4–6: Body, Frame, and Paint
Look for mismatched paint panels (a sign of prior bodywork), check panel gaps for uniformity, and inspect the underbody for rust or accident repair welds.
7–8: Brakes and Suspension
Test brakes for pulling to one side and unusual noise. Push down on each corner of the car — it should return to level in one bounce, not two or three.
9–10: Electricals and Documentation
Test every switch, light, and the A/C on both settings. Finally, verify the chassis number matches the registration book and there's no outstanding loan or dispute on the vehicle.
Can't Check All 10 Yourself?
